Nestled against the Dhauladhar range in Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala is a town of two personalities. Lower Dharamshala is a workaday Indian hill town — busy, commercial, and unremarkable. But drive 10 km up into the clouds and you arrive at McLeod Ganj, the extraordinary community that has been the seat of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile since 1959 and the home of the 14th Dalai Lama.
For travellers seeking meaning beyond landscapes, McLeod Ganj offers something genuinely rare: the living culture of a 1,300-year-old Buddhist civilisation, transplanted to an Indian hillside and practised daily by a community of remarkable resilience.
The Tsuglagkhang Complex
The heart of the Tibetan community is the Tsuglagkhang — the main temple complex — which houses a large gilded statue of Shakyamuni Buddha and the Namgyal Monastery, the personal monastery of the Dalai Lama. On auspicious days, monks in crimson robes fill the courtyard for puja, and the sound of conch shells and deep horns echoes across the hillside.
If you are lucky, you may receive teachings directly from His Holiness when he gives public talks — check the official Dalai Lama website for scheduled events.
Meditation & Yoga Retreats
McLeod Ganj has a rich ecosystem of meditation centres, yoga ashrams, and Tibetan medicine practitioners. The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives offers courses in Tibetan Buddhism and philosophy for serious students. Several centres offer 10-day Vipassana retreats for those seeking a deeper reset.
Even a single morning of guided meditation at one of the local gompa (monastery halls) can shift your perspective in ways that a month of sightseeing cannot.
The Triund Trek
The Triund ridge, sitting at 2,842 metres, is the perfect one-day or overnight trek from McLeod Ganj. The trail climbs steeply through rhododendron and oak forests before opening onto a broad green meadow at the foot of the Dhauladhar snowline. Camp here overnight and wake up to one of the most dramatic mountain vistas in all of Himachal.
Start early from McLeod Ganj — the first half of the trail is in shade and the views from the ridge at sunrise are worth any effort.
Dalai Lama Temple Road
The road from McLeod Ganj to the temple is lined with Tibetan restaurants, thangka painting studios, and shops selling prayer flags, incense, and handcrafted jewellery. This is also where you will find the best momos in Himachal — try the Tibetan Kitchen on Bhagsu Road for steamed lamb dumplings that are exceptional.
