Manali is Himachal Pradesh's adventure capital — a compact hill town where the mountains press in so closely that you can see ski slopes from your hotel window and hear the Beas River rushing below your balcony. Every season brings a different adventure menu, and knowing which month to visit can be the difference between a trip of a lifetime and a trip spent waiting for the weather to cooperate.
Skiing & Snow Sports (January–March)
Solang Valley, 14 km from Manali town, and Rohtang Pass (when open) are the primary ski destinations. The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) operates a basic ski school at Solang that is a good starting point for beginners. For more serious skiing, Rohtang offers longer runs once heavy snowfall arrives in January.
Snowboarding, snow scooter rides, and tube sledging are also available throughout winter. The Solang base station has equipment rental. Note that access to Rohtang requires a permit (easily obtained online) and is restricted during heavy snowfall.
Paragliding (May–October, Best in May–June)
Solang Valley is the most popular paragliding site but for a more spectacular experience, drive 65 km to Bir Billing — the world's second-highest paragliding site and host of the Paragliding World Cup. Tandem flights with a certified pilot last 15–45 minutes and give you views of Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges that are incomparable.
May and June offer the best flying conditions — clear skies, reliable thermals, and cool temperatures. Monsoon season (July–August) is generally unsuitable for paragliding.
River Rafting (July–September)
The Beas River swells to exhilarating levels during and after the monsoon. Rafting stretches from Pirdi to Jhiri (14 km, Grade II–III rapids) are the most popular and are suitable for beginners. For more experienced rafters, the Kullu stretch offers Grade III–IV rapids.
Always choose a licensed operator, wear the provided life jacket, and follow your guide's instructions. The river is cold year-round — even in summer, waterproof gear is recommended.
Mountain Biking (May–October)
The Manali–Leh Highway, undertaken by mountain bike, is considered one of the world's great cycling adventures. Even if you don't attempt the full route, day rides from Manali to Solang Valley or to the villages of Vashisht and Shanag offer memorable Himalayan cycling. Several operators rent quality bikes and provide support vehicles.
Trekking (June–September)
Some of Himachal's best treks start from or near Manali: the Beas Kund trek (3 days), the Hampta Pass crossing (5 days), and the iconic Pin-Parvati Pass (9 days) for experienced trekkers. June and September are the best months — July and August bring heavy rain on many routes.
